About the Institute
John W. James is the Founder, Russell P. Friedman is the Executive
Director and Eric J. Cline is Executive Director in Canada of The Grief
Recovery Institute. The Institute, an internationally recognized authority,
provides programs for The Compassionate Friends, The National SIDS
Foundation, The National AIDS Network, The University of California at
Irvine, Chapman University, and many others.
The Grief Recovery® Certification Program
"What more could I have done for my client?" In response to this poignant
question, the Institute now offers the only Grief Recovery® Counseling Certificate
available for Professionals in North America. The Certification Program authorizes
establishment of:
The Grief Recovery®
Outreach Program
- A 12
week recovery group utilizing formats created by the Institute that assure long-term
recovery from the pain of loss. Groups are moderated by Certified Graduates in hundreds of
communities throughout North America. All necessary materials are provided.

The Grief Recovery® Community Education Program
-
A great deal of destructive information exists regarding recovery from significant
emotional loss. Certification Program graduates are provided with all materials necessary
to establish Community Education Programs.
The Grief Recovery Handbook - 1998 - The Action Program
for Moving Beyond Loss, originally published in 1988, represented a breakthrough
in helping grievers deal with loss. Most professionals had addressed grief from a
conceptual, intellectual perspective. Therapists, clergy, doctors and others had been
trained to deal with grief academically and philosophically. This often left grievers
with much understanding - but very little recovery.
The essential skills for helping grievers while powerful and specific, are simple. We
teach them in our Grief Recovery® Certification Program. We have trained and certified
several thousand people. Many of them facilitate Grief Recovery® Outreach Program groups
in large and small communities throughout the United States, Canada, and increasingly, the
rest of the world. They are also given all the necessary materials to establish and
maintain Community Education Programs. Training
