Grief Recovery

"Grievers do not lack courage or willingness.
What they lack is helpful information and correct choices."

The Grief Recovery Institute provides expertise in people’s reaction to death, to divorce, to major health issues, to financial changes - both positive and negative - and to the growing litany of "abuse" related losses that have limited so many millions of lives.

John W. James founded the Grief Recovery Institute after managing to discover a way to deal with the overwhelming impact of the death of a three day old son in 1977.

The actions that John took that allowed him to retake a productive place in the mainstream of his life, became the foundation principles and actions that led to the writing of original version of The Grief Recovery Handbook, in 1985, and later to When Children Grieve, in 2001.

John has appeared on hundreds of television shows as well as thousands of radio broadcasts and print interviews. John has spoken in front of live audiences that now total more than 250,000 people. John is an engaging speaker with a down home, Southern Illinois twang, and with an unerring sense of and sensitivity to the broken hearts in the audience.

Russell Friedman joined John at the Institute in 1987, following a second divorce and a financial meltdown of major proportion. When Russell first attended a one day workshop that John was teaching, it was the first time he realized that the word "grief" signified people’s reactions to anything other than death.

Since then, Russell has experienced many other losses, including the death of his mother in 1992. He has had to apply the very ideas that he and John teach to the losses in his own life.

Russell is also an excellent public speaker, and like John can take this most off-limits topic and make it in bounds for discussion and ultimately to help people better understand their own reactions to sad, painful, or negative events.

Eric Cline, Director of the Grief Recovery Institute of Canada, spent many years in the funeral industry. He soon became aware of how little effective education was bestowed on funeral directors, who were in direct contact with broken hearted grievers immediately after the death of a loved one.

Frustrated by the lack of focus on truly helping grieving people, Eric joined John and Russell in 1991 to bring the message to the general population as well as to funeral directors and cemeterians.
